Fairyblossom Festival 2015!

I am ridiculously excited about bringing to you all a brand new event in 2015 - The Fairyblossom Festival! We have our site secured in Chehalis, WA, on June 20 - 21.  The application for vendors, volunteers, performers, campers and buying gate tickets is all online and ready to go!

We plan to have some different activities going on this coming year that I am really aflutter about; crowing of the Flower Queen and Forest Queen with a royal court, the summer games tourney with glow golf, camping!  My favorite though is the Fairy Feast and Stone Soup.

On Saturday evening, everyone is invited to contribute to our pot-luck feast where we will be brewing up Stone Soup, ala the old folktale.  We'll have a pot and kettle from Brunetta Blacksmithing, we'll have a stone, custom carved, from Stonebreaker, and we'll have delicious ingredients added by everyone!

It is a community event and totally free so bring a bowl and a veggie to throw in the pot!  There's rumour that our own local character, Witchy-poo, may even appear to do the cooking of the soup.

Part of our proceeds will be going to support the Castle Fund (that is, a fundraiser to help buy a permanent event site here in the PNW).

Along with the Coupon Fairy Booklet, it has been a lot of various little streams to help raise the money for our first major step, which is the feasibility study, and I am excited that these balls are now rolling. The booklet should be ready for it's first look over in a week or so, as the coupons from stores are coming in.

Also - today is the last day to enter Aimee Stewart's giveaway, don't miss your chance to win!

OMGosh! It is only Monday and this week is set on zoom! I'll be flying out to Aunties Bookstore in Spokane on Wednesday for a 10:30am reading of my book.  Bring the kiddos if you're in the area!

On Thursday, I have Faeries and Elves Camp for which I've planned some fun activities and am looking forward to leading the parade of magical wee people around the neighborhood and then *whoosh*, back to the Emerald City for a birthday party and a late night appearance at the EMP Museum for their Myth & Magic Masquerade Ball!

I am really hoping to see a great turnout from the LARP, CosPlay and general geek/fantasy/Sci-fi community!  It should be a good time for all. :)

There will be a quest for adventurers, costumes galore, delicious food, drink, knights and high fun until the early hours of morn! I cannot even express how excited and honored I am to be a part of this particular event for the very first time. :)

All that being said...I also bring to you this week's new Giveaway from Faeries for Nature! In celebration of reaching 4,000 Likes on her facebook page, Faerie Queen Rose is offering these four tantalizing prizes.  WINNER TAKES ALL - so get your entries in!

A Deal is Struck [Collaborative Storyweaving]

Thin, grey light filtered through the ring of fog that encircled the group at large.  “Very real.” Ry’llia replied wanly.  “The hubris of our two peoples is destroying everything.  Humans believing they can live without nature, Fae believing they can live without dreams.”  Her eyes flashed around the canopy of leaves sorrowfully.  “Our choices are few, and severe.”
The young man pondered for a bit. Then replied, “I don't care what any of the others think. I want to help. I will do whatever I can to help you fix this. I must.”
A tribal pixie, fierce and as wild as the forest itself turned to look at him. Her voice was a bit disconcerting as it came out; almost sultry, but clear and pure. "One step in the right direction can send a storm of change." She turned to Ry'llia. "My tribe will protect these ones. I accept that responsibility as they start this Journey."
She bowed deeply and then moved to stand next to the humans. The pixies were savage fighters. Nothing would harm them without serious incident. Thankfully, though, they chose negotiations before war.
"Your offer is both generous and dangerous.” The Speaker regarded the pixie tribe, no less ferocious for their diminutive size. She didn’t need to ask them if they were willing to take the risk, they wouldn’t have stepped forward otherwise. “You will have to return with them to the iron cities, choked with poisons to us.”
Ry’llia’s narrow brow pulled together pensively.  What she understood was that mortal ways were causing decay and decimation to seep across the world.  Ever since the Great Lockdown, the steel skylines had long ago been quarantined from the natural world, but their contaminates had not been so contained.  All the while, the population seemed to amble through their days in a stupor, unwitting.  Why?

Tree Lore: Magnolia

Today is the First day of Spring, otherwise known as the Vernal Equinox!  Happy flowers and sunshine everyone :)  In celebration, I decided to highlight one of my favorite trees associated with the Spring Season....

Magnolia
Elemental Association: Earth
Astrological Signs: Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo
Ruling Planet: Sun, Venus
Gender: Female
Magnolia is an ancient genus of plant having evolved even before bees appeared on the timeline.  The giant blossoms on this tree developed to encourage pollination by beetles first.  Some fossilized specimens have been found to date back approximately twenty-million years!
Various parts of this tree have found popular uses across the world.  In traditional Chinese medicine (known as Hou Po), the bark is used for regulating Qi (life-force) and resolving stagnation.  It helps with coughing, vomiting and bloating.  The dental community has also taken interest in the Magnolia bark extract because it interferes with the formation of bacterial plaque.
In ancient China where the plant was called Yu-lan (Jade Orchid), only the Emporer was entitled to own a Magnolia and he would occasionally give a root as a sign of imperial favor. The ancient Aztecs also knew of the Magnolia tree, naming it Eloxochitl or "Flower with Green Husk". One superstition tells that a blossom placed in the bedroom will kill anyone who sleeps there.
In Japan the blossoms are used to wrap some foods and eaten and the Magnolia is the state tree of Mississippi.  The fragrance of the blossoms is thought to possess aromatherapy qualities that help reduce anxiety.  Native Americans were said to avoid sleeping under the tree when in bloom because of its strong scent.
In flower symbolism, the Magnolia represents nobility, perseverance and a love of nature.  Indeed, this plant has been known to survive ice ages, mountain range formations and continental drift and still rises regally among other flowering trees with some of the most magnificent foliage.  Dreaming of Magnolia symbolizes beauty, grace and elegance.  It can also represent a need to feel protected and safe, or to be recognized.
Wands made from Magnolia will help to encourage a regal but gentile demeanor.  There is an almost hypnotic and languid quality to this wood that is at once commanding but unhurried.  It will help the practitioner to make wise decisions and develop patience and endurance.  Magnolia will inspire a graceful and elegant application of will and encourage one to see the beauty of nature everywhere.

Tree Lore: Monkeypod

The name sounds so strange, but I do like the lore that goes along with this tree - not to mention the tufts :)

Monkeypod
Elemental Association: Water, Air
Astrological Signs: Pisces, Cancer, Scorpio, Aquairius, Gemini, Libra
Ruling Planet: Neptune, Pluto
Gender: Male
Monkeypod - also commonly known as the Raintree - is a popular ornamental tree.  It is often used for shade and flourishes well in tropical climates with an impressive, spreading crown.  In Hawaii it can flower any time of year with spindly pink clusters that look like powder-puffs caught in the canopy of the tree.  This tree loves to be in the sun and its fruit is an edible nutrient for various birds and wildlife.
The Hawaiin Monkeypod wood has often been a popular choice for carving figurines of various gods such as Kan, Ku, Lono and Kanaloa, often referred to as Tiki Gods or statues.  In New Zealand, the tree is said have sprung from the leaves which fell from the crown of Hatu-patu, god of the winds.
The Monkeypod gained it's alternate name of Raintree because according to legends, water has been claimed to fall from underneath its leaves even in the driest of weather.  Though this phenomenon has legendary status, it is a very real occurrence.  Due to the ability of this tree to rapidly condense ambient moisture in the air, the trunk is sometimes found to drip with water.
Magical tools made from this wood will be good for use in celebrations and festivities.  It may also act as an excellent conduit for invoking the weather to one's favor.  Having an air of mystery, it will also assist with puzzle and riddle solving.
The Monkeypod is a cheerful and majestic tree whose canopy provides a sprawling shelter to any who come beneath it.

Overlap: Tuatha De Dannan and Hyperboreans

Tir Nan Óg
The Tuatha Dé Danann were spoken of as having come from islands in the north of the world or (Tir Nan Óg, "Land of Youth"), in other sources, from the sky.  They became the Sidhe (people of the mound), also thought of as Faeries, known to love music, dance, games and hunts.

Today I smile at "the overlap" or, the place where subjects coincide such as science and religion, life and art, or imagination and reality, bad luck or new opportunity.  The Overlap is that between place where things seem one way but might be another; it's where anything is possible.

I look for the overlap every day for that is the place where we have the power to transform lemons in to lemonaid.

Consequently, I've always got a little piece of my mind geared toward these intrigues.  Was that a weeping cedar tree, or a Seussical creature migrating?  A dead-end road or the gateway to a trod?  Trash or treasure?

Yesterday, I had a conversation about the origins of the Fae, wherein the legends of the Tuatha De Dannan were spoken of and this morning, in mulling over those legends, a flap of overlap happened to slap right across my brain.

What is folklore and what is history?  Sometimes no one can say, but we would be short-sighted to conclude that they do not ever overlap.

It always makes me smile to find these mingling insights, all the better to share and spend the rest of the day in a little bit of wonder.

In Greek mythology, the Hyperboreans were a mythical people who lived far to the north of Thrace.  Their land was perfect with the sun shining twenty-four hours a day.
"Never the Muse is absent
from their ways: lyres clash and flutes cry
and everywhere maiden choruses whirling.
Neither disease nor bitter old age is mixed
in their sacred blood; far from labor and battle they live."

Princess Diaries: Grave Goblin Lore

Winter has been a crazily busy time.  It has been quite some time since any new residents have come to live at the Castle. Over the season, as I've been walking around and holding congress with the other residents here, I kept thinking it was time for someone new.

That's when I heard that old Gundersnack was going to be in town.  Gundersnack runs the Orphaned Goblin Relocation Experiment (O.G.R.E.) and I've adopted 3 Goblins from him over the years.

I set an appointment to meet with him straight away, and soon thereafter had set my gaze upon a horde of the little buggers.  One by one I met them, picked them up, turned them roundabout but one yellowing Grave Goblin caught my heart (which is really the best way to see things).

Well, I adopted him for my growing horde, and we went out to dinner straight away.  After all, travel-food isn't usually the best.  What is your name, my new goblin friend? I thought as we rode along in our carriage.  As with all things of this nature, I know when I've got it because the thought t-bones sideways into my mind.  For now, he wasn't answering.

We sipped savory mandarin drinks and broke seasoned bread, swirling them in oil.  A fire burned in the pit before us, where I'm sure they sometimes roasted beast.  Soon enough the entrees came and that was when he first spoke eyeing a bowl of noodles with his one eye:  Oh, I LOVE eggs! He said. And rubbery noodles are delicious.  Grave Goblins are like the undead, so half-cooked things are best.  Naturally I shared the meal with him - even though his name remained a mystery.

Back at the Castle, I introduced him to the rest of the Horde: Grubs (Nose Goblin), Gumbo (Mud Goblin) and Grimble (Oak Goblin).  My pottish little kitty, Samhain, nestled down in their circle and tucked them in for the evening.

During a conversation with a friend the next morning, I was explaining the name dilemma...saying that I couldn't quite make out his garbled words.  Gormen? Grimsly? Gummer?

Gristle! He exclaimed.  I am Gristle the Grimbringer - and I love chewy noodles, dusty food and rotted meat!

So there it was: Gristle.  What with four goblins around the castle now, I expect there to be some crazy adventures in the near future!

Totem: Hummingbird ~**~**~**~

I will never forget the first time I saw a hummingbird land, I was half-convinced they never did so!  I knew then that I had a special connection to the little aviator.

Yesterday I woke up, had a glass of sparkling water and was looking out the window watching the birds.  Finches  and red-breasted robins swooped in the sunlight.  Out among them all, one tiny green hummingbird darted into sight and alighted on a branch.

There was my little bird :)  Bringing me a delicate smile and visions of a land that inhabits this world just beyond our mundane sight.

This, combined with my dream of the Hummingbird King left me feeling the urge to recognize them by writing about the totem today.

Hummingbirds are the only birds that can fly backwards, full-stop in mid-flight and hover and move up and down.  They live on bugs and other tiny, protein bearing insects, and drink the sugary nectar from the flowers they pollinate in order to maintain their metabolism.  Their wings move in the pattern of the infinity symbol.

Here are some of the insights from other sources that I've discovered about the hummingbird:
--Hummingbirds represent Joy, Adaptability and Fierce Independence, Timelessness
--They are a symbol of accomplishing that which seems impossible
--"Joyas Voladoras" or "The Flying Jewel"
--They look to "what can be" rather than pining for "what was"
--Hummingbird has a special talent for working with flowers: growing, healing, aromatherapy
--They preserve the old ways and traditions
--The totem represents a high energy and spirit that must be free
--Helps to pull our awareness out of the mundane world so that we can see the beauty and wonder around us.
--Reminds us to be persistent in our dreams
--In dreams they symbolize the potential greatness in us, from our seemingly small ideas

Whoa-ho-Snow!

The world wrapped sleeping under sheets of ice
With blankets of snow, dreaming Cthulhu lies.

Need I explain that it snowed mightily last night and today?  I was getting my peppermint cocoa last night when I looked out the back archway.

There he was, standing sentinel and I thought how beautiful a white-on-white picture of snowy Cthulhu would be.

This morning, I took one.  Now I believe that a roaring fire, port-wine cheese, crackers and soup sound utterly delicious - nom!

Princess Diaries: Mudgoblin Lore

Often, humans believe that "objects" cannot speak but the philosopher Epictetus taught in his discourses that just as speaking was a skill, so was listening and one must develop both.

The other morning I awoke suddenly to the throaty gulump-gulump sound cats make just before the cough up a slimy hairyball.

Now, I have 3 goblins that I've adopted here at the Crystal castle but Gumbo the Mudgoblin is the one with whom the felines commiserate most.  They lick his eyes and rub his fingers, but he sort of quiet and keeps to himself.

On this particular morning, I looked over just in time to see my Siamese - Meiling - gack ALL over Gumbo!  Ew.  I tried to snatch him out of the way, but her aim was true.  My Mudgoblin was covered in goo....

I collected Gumbo and brought him to the sink, turning on the water.  Rubbing my hands with Suntree Soap I put him under the warm faucet and began lathering.

This is all wrong. The thought inserted itself in my mind.  The water is way too warm - I'm a Mudgoblin!

This is how I always know when something is speaking and that I should listen: incongruous thoughts enter sideways into whatever I was initially thinking about and then merge into my full stream of thought.

Did you commiserate with my cat to have her gack on you purposefully?! I asked Gumbo.

My skin was very dry, I like it to be cool and damp.

Well, that sure was a strange way to go about getting me to give you a nice cool, bath! I turned the temperature down.  From now on, I'll be sure to mist your skin now and again.

Gumbo smiled happily.

...and that was how I learned some secret Lore about Mudgoblins!

Canterbury "Tails" Part 2

continued...
..so that sneaky little Nymph might transfer her foxy spirit onto the good Sir Knight...

The Knight craned his neck over left shoulder and right, each time the tail swinging just out of his sight!  The children of Canterbury however shouted, fingers waggling Traegun's direction, "A fox!" they proclaimed.

He took off running, and the hunt was on!  Skirting from tree to tree, those kids chased that foxy Knight all around the faire.  Each time he ventured forth from hiding behind a fir, they gave chase, trying to catch him and tug at his tail.

As they rounded the trail and crossed by the Queen's pavilion, they espied a fenced in ring.  With much shouting and whooping the gaggle of fiesty spritelings corralled the foxy Knight within.

Cornered in the ring, the Nymph Eimmas placed upon him another kiss and with a wish away she whisked his tail!

Everyone cheered, having had great fun and the Princess gave each child a charm as a gift to remember the magical hunt!

Bad Breath Barbarian of Norwescon 34

Princess Lolly gazed out the window of her carriage.  She was on her way to Faerieworlds and during the long ride, occupying her thoughts with pranks to play on her arch-nemesis Wotan kept her amused.

Recently, Wotan had sent her a nasty-gram, threatening to show up at Faerieworlds.  He was probably still upset that he had to share the opening act at Norwescon 34 with her - but really, what did barbarians know about fantasy anyway?

Maybe she could find someone to throw him in the river.  It would probably be the first bath he'd had since, well, ever.  Ideas rolled through her mind as the landscape passed by outside and she smiled to herself....

:*¨¨*:Spring Fairy Festival 2011:*¨¨*:

For those that have never been, the Spring Fairy Festival in Auburn, WA is one of my favorite events of the season! I attend every year but this year was particularly special.  First I had the pleasure of leading the Costume Parade around the courtyard and show and instructed a very crazy and fun Fairy Wand Workshop.

The highlight of the show for me this year was having the honour of playing my silver flute on stage with the Faerie Band Green Fay!  Now that I've got a little clip of us, check it out.  The music is great and we'll be at Faerieworlds on June 17-19!!

Fairy Naming :*¨¨*:๑۩۩๑:*¨¨*

This morning I decided to take a stroll through the garden and wiggle my toes in the fresh green grass.  A little ways off I spied a wee fairy friend, perched on a mushroom.

What do you think her name is?

Visit my castle to leave your suggestion!

Did you know that the process of "naming" used to be called "saining"?  Saining was an ancient rite of Irish and Scottish origin that was performed on a newborn baby in order to discover its "true name".  For Faeries, it can be done at anytime, and they say that knowing a true name can give one power over an individual.

One variation of this ritual speaks of passing the baby over a flame three times. The purpose of this is both to call upon higher powers to reveal the baby's formal name as well as grant it protective wards from more malicious faeries.

Another version speaks of passing the baby through a hole in a large rock that has been naturally hewn, in order to protect it from being stolen as a changeling child. (Ring any bells with a fairy seeing stone? :)

Other incarnations of the rite tell us that it was used to grant the baby its formal name, welcome it into the community and give it blessings.  Whilst still others say that it was the responsibility of nobles to perform this rite on members of their house or court.

Eventually the process was adopted and christianized and came to be known as modern day baptism.

Pirates Cove Drossbox - Yaaaaaar!

Frigid winds whipped off the Puget Sound and around the Pike Place (Goblin) Market.  By lunchtime, Princess Lolly's fingers were more like frozen finger-pops attached to her hands than working appendages.  Playing the tutti-flutti outside this early in the morning demanded hot tea to go with it in the future.

Just as she was packing up her silver flute to investigate that tea option, who should appear at the Brass Pig but lo!  Her friend, Hawk - and he was looking as mischievous as a lost boy ever does.

"Was that you I heard fluting away down there miss Lolly?" The Lost Boy grinned at the pink-haired Princess.

"It most certainly was," she nodded, returning his smile. "It is so cold down there that even my gum froze! I was going to get some hot earl grey and warm up. What are you doing down here anyway?"

"Hiding treasure..."

Now, anyone who is an expert on Pirates, Lost Boys, Pixies and Fair Folk of all kinds knows that if there is one thing they all have in common, it is a love of shiny things and treasure.  Hawk chuckled, his blue eyes shifting up the stairs toward Post Alley and back again.  "You should stick your frozen gum on the Gum Wall and then help me hide this treasure!"

Lolly was smirking now too. "That is a spectacular idea." she pronounced.  And that's exactly what she did!  "Now...where to hide that treasure?"

The two friends pondered this as they strolled toward the waterfront.  Lolly twirled her hair around her forefinger in thought; Hawk stroked his hairs on his chin in contemplation.  Standing at the cross-walk, the duo looked across the street and there before them was the perfect place.

"Pirates Plunder!" they exclaimed in unison.  Rushing forward they looked all around until finally, seeking a good place to hide the drossbox, they decided to ask the Wooden Fisherman.

With a strange ancient, sea-salty voice, he told them this mariner's rhyme:

The Fisherman tries to net some fish
He sometimes gets more than his wish
For with his catch is worth beyond measure
A plunder box filled with Faerie Treasure!

Hawk took the clue and hid the treasure, and the two friends laughed, running up the harbor steps and leaving the surprise behind for anyone to find!

When Princess Lolly returned to the Castle, she raced into the Treasury.  Carefully she  marked the map for Pirates Cove with the location of a new hidden drossbox.

Tree Lore: Linden

This week's tree of study is the Linden.  I chose this one because I used to use Linden scented soap which had such a soft and clean smell it gives me warm memories :)

Elemental Association: Earth
Astrological Signs: Capricorn, Taurus, Virgo
Ruling Planet: Venus, Saturn
Gender: Female
Linden is a tree arrayed with leafy green foliage worthy of mention by such notables as Pliny and Aristophanes who both remarked upon its beauty.  Being both strong and lightweight, Linden has been used for a number of purposes over the ages from corset boning to yokes for the plough as relayed to us by Virgil: “A light linden-tree also is felled betimes for the yoke”.  The inner bark was sometimes used for paper.
The Green Dryads, or tree spirits, were said to be wedded to Linden trees. In Roman mythology the Linden tree was a symbol of conjugal love and fidelity.  It was described by the poet Elizabeth Barrett Browning in the following passage:
“Here a Linden-tree stood, bright'ning
All adown its silver rind;
For, as some trees draw the lightning,
So this tree, unto my mind,
Drew to earth the blessed sunshine
From the sky where it was shrined”

It is sometimes known as the "Bee Tree" because the aroma and nectar of the blossoms are very attractive to them. The pale-colored honey made by the busy visitors is of excellent quality.  Linden sap can also be made into a nice wine.
Another common name for Linden is the Lime Tree. It is the National tree of the Czech Republic and in Slavic mythology it is sacred.  In Germany, towns would hold judiciary meetings under the Linden with the belief that it would help to uncover the truth.  In German folklore it was called the "Tree of Lovers".  This is possibly attributed in part to the passage by famous medieval German poet Walther von der Vogelweide:
“Under the lime tree
on the open field,
where we two had our bed,
you still can see
lovely both
broken flowers and grass.”
This could also be attributed in part to an older fertility rite where the Grass King would hand over his crown under a grove of seven Lindens so that it could be stuck into the soil of the flax fields to promote growth.
Linden will be useful with magic and spells that focus on love, romance, honesty and jurisprudence.  Ancient Scythian diviners also used to weave leaves of Linden around their fingers when speaking prophecy, claiming that the trees would speak to them through their leaves.
This wood can assist in seduction or coercive efforts, especially when accompanied by the aromatic blossoms.  It will also favor genuine endeavors that may require some hard work or attention to detail.  Another interesting magical quality of the Linden is that it can assist with the recalling and enhancement of memory.

Card or Coal?

Where's WOTAN??
Yuletide greetings my fairy friends, both near and far!  Last week I decided to snail mail some holiday postcards.  Sending Christmas cards filled with magic is one of my favorite things to do every year.

Of course, anytime I decide on a project or fun adventure, that pesky barbarian WOTAN is always around to try to pluck the wings off my fun.
Writing Fairy Postcards

This time I was prepared! I looked high and low, left and right, before beginning.  WOTAN was nowhere to be found, so I sat down with my long list and boy-howdy was it looooooong!

I collected all the names of every sparkling friend out there that needed a card mailed to them: Abigail, Reianna, Dominic, Nicholas, Mia Loriette, Genevieve, Gwen, Brianna, Katie, Connor, Abbie, Megan, Lili, Skylar, Logan, Salud, Niko, Nora, Aiden, Malia, Renee, Hannah, Ella, Serena, Sierra and Mikayla - That's an impressive list!

Off to the Pixie Post!
Donning my frothy princess pink feather quill, I went to work.  One by one all the cards were filled out.  Each one was carefully decorated, stamped and ready for the Pixie Post Office (as you can imagine, things get a little crazy with a horde of frantic pixies trying to sort through all that faerie mail!)

Fortunately I wasn't interrupted at all as I filled out all the postcards for my friends.  Lavendina the Dragon helped me get them all into the mailbox without a single WOTAN sighting.

Card or Coal for WOTAN?...hm...
In fact, I was beginning to wonder...what should I send to WOTAN?  He spent all year terrorizing myself and my faerie court!  He tried to smash me at Norwescon.  Then he used a magical bear to defeat my champion then sold me to some pirates at Midsummer Faire.  After that at Orycon he left me cockroaches and a rat!

Of course...he did sneak a kiss on my cheek at Midsummer and he did write me a love note at Orycon (even though he denies everything)...

What do you think? Should I send a Yule Card to WOTAN?  Or should I instead send him a Christmas Coal?

I need your help to decide!  Cast your vote for Card or Coal on the upper right and next week I'll send him one......or the other :)
